Narrative Essay (800 Words)

Having written a description of the painting, it is now time to write a narrative based on the painting of your choice. Choose a person or object in the painting to be the focus of that narrative. This topic leaves much room for creativity; yet, your essay should not simply describe random incidents but have a working structure, beginning to end. Consider the following issues:

  • Choose a narrative perspective (point of view): first-person, third-person.
  • Choose a plot form (a time sequence): beginning to end, in medias res, flashbacks.
  • Decide on a tense.
  • Use narrative techniques we discussed in class: good dialogue, showing rather than telling, interesting content, and an appropriate level of detail.
  • Use descriptive techniques we discussed in class: sensory language, nouns, precise verbs, and adjective to advance your thesis.
  • Fit the narrative to the scope of the assignment, perhaps choose a time, episode, or event out of the life you are about to describe.
